SOE's BALLS OF STEEL

1940. Germany have invaded Norway. Sweden is blockaded by threats and warships to prevent desperately needed cargoes of steel, in particular ball bearings, being sent to Britain. Without steel there can be no planes, tanks or weapons  and, Germany hopes, Britain will be forced to surrender. But one brave and slightly eccentric man believes he can smuggle out Britain's steel. A series of daring blockade busting runs begins, but for those who volunteer the odds are grim and capture means facing years of imprisonment in a concentration camp. This is the story of how a tiny ball bearing spurred one of the most adventurous and daring operations of WWII.

...a really engaging storyteller who evokes, with such a light touch, the disturbing happenings associated with 'the room'.

This book brings fresh insights, fresh research material from more recently released archives and for me critically it gives a truer sense of this remarkable man's challennges and achievements.
